We got something like 8-10 inches of snow in Rhode Island last night, and after cleaning off the cars I wanted to give my driveway and opportunity to benefit from direct sunlight all day to aid in the melting process. That means one thing, and one thing only: put the vehicles on the side lawn.

First up, the wife’s ML350!

Kinja'd!!!

That’s as far as it got. If I wanted to tear up my lawn I could have backed up a little and gotten a little farther spinning the tires, but by and large that was all. The ML has 4-Matic all wheel drive and Michelin all season tires on it.

I actually thought it would make it a little further, but the wide tires (275s) and a slight uphill climb proved too much for it. That said, if my life depended on it, I bet I could find a way up that hill with it.

And next, surprising nobody, is my Land Cruiser:

Kinja'd!!!

The Cruiser had the tougher path, going through some really deep snow as it went up over the curb and onto the lawn. I don’t think I ever actually hit the gas pedal, it just crawled it’s fat ass up there like it was on pavement. I drove it up the ML’s path as well with the same ending.

That’s probably the least surprising result of all time, though I remember doing the same with my F250 with the same tires and it required a lot more work than the Cruiser did. Lots of tire spinning with the F250, even with the front hubs locked.

The Cruiser has more or less confirmed everything I suspected about it when I bought it. It’s comfortable, chugs fuel, and makes road surfaces its bitch. I’m about 2 months away from it being my favorite vehicle I’ve ever owned.

Im about a $10,000 lottery winning away from going to the presumed owners of a neglected LC and buying it.

Well, Landcruiser are 4wd... Was the f250 4wd? If not then it’s normal... Also a Corvette with Hakkas will be a much better winter car than a Landcruiser with 4 seasons...

The F250 was a 4x4...locking the front hubs wouldn’t do much if it wasn’t, haha.

Do it. I got mine for $3400, just needed tires. One of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned.

I tried locking the hubs on a 2WD truck once, got a “Danger to Manifold” warning. Wouldn’t advise it.

Probably needed to overnight some parts from Japan to fix that.

I drive a chevy 2500 HD in the snow all winter long. It does surprisingly poor in deep snow given its mass and 4 wd. If it ever got stuck I would have to call a tow truck it’s so heavy. I find it likes to dig to the ground before it starts to move where a lighter or better balanced car/truck will drive on top of the snow.

The Capri Blue paint on the ML looks really nice...

It’s a nice color. Unfortunately there’s quite a bit of rust coming up through it.

Every time I decide that I’m definitely keeping the Tacoma, a LC post pops up. There’s something to be saying for getting rid of the monthly payment and paying cash for a LC, especially since I only drive about 5k/yr.

The Cruisers are appreciating in value now, too. Personally, I’d say to get a Cruiser and a small trailer if you need that truck-bed functionality. The fuel mileage won’t kill you if that’s all the driving you’re doing. Though a Tacoma is always a good choice, they hold their value like crazy.

You really need to find a way to take it of road, it comes alive out there. Its hard to describe but, for as charming a curmudgeon it is on the road it becomes a legit revelation off. Effortless torque, and it flows around rocks

New Hampshire and MA have some places, and I guess there’s some good green laning out in Nantucket. I’ll even go to upstate NY if I need to, make a weekend of it.

Even just getting up my lawn I was impressed. Just kinda idled its way up there in high.

For now it’s a big, sturdy family vehicle. But I’ll find a way to get it off road in 2017.

We finally have enough snow here that the MJ will struggle in some of the older crusty stuff with deeper ruts frozen in. I haven’t been stuck yet, but I went down a trail the other day that had a bunch of sled tracks and it took me about a half hour of back and forth wiggles to make it through one 200 foot section where one of them must have been doing his best to cut donuts.
